Sean found many chess designs to be overly complex, and believed modern chess designs lacked historical reference to the army of characters. He sculpted his pieces into the most simplified forms he could imagine, while maintaining the individual character of each role. Pawn forms are inspired by the helmets worn by low ranking archers. The Bishops mitre has been distilled to its purest form. King and Queen forms draw inspiration from their respective crowns. The swift Knight is represented by his graceful steed. And the architectural Rook anchors the corners of the army. This Chess Set is handcrafted from “lost-wax” cast bronze and finished with beautiful patinas. The set includes a marble board with a subtle rounded checkered pattern.
